Gold Coast Planting Guide

Unless you’re a professional gardener, it can be hard to know what types of plants will thrive in your garden. If this sounds like you, check out our easy-to-follow guide:

Summer Plant Selections

With more rain and warmer conditions, it’s the perfect time of year to get in the garden and start planting. Always be sure that all your new seedlings get plenty of water as the hotter conditions make it easier for the soil to dry out.

Best species to plant in summer:

  • Begonia
  • Celosia
  • Gomphrena
  • Sunflower
  • Torenia
  • Alyssum
  • Cosmos
  • Marigold
  • Petunia
  • Portuluca
  • Salvia

Autumn Plant Selections

Autumn is a very interesting time of the year for your garden. It’s ideal for establishing new plants, as the fallen leaves and other organic matter make for great compost. Also, the lowered humidity and cooler temperatures make the task of gardening more pleasant.

Best species to plant in Autumn:

  • Alyssum
  • Marigolds
  • Petunia
  • Candytuft
  • Cineraria
  • Clarkia
  • Cornflower
  • Nemesia
  • Pansy
  • Phlox
  • Statice
  • Stock
  • Viola
  • Snapdragon
  • English daisy
  • Poppy

Winter Plant Selections

With winter comes slowed growth for your garden. This is the perfect time of year to get stuck into any major structural landscaping projects you may have been putting off over summer. The winter climate isn’t too conducive to establishing new plants due to morning frost and a lack of rain.

Best species to plant in Winter:

  • Alyssum
  • Marigold
  • Petunia
  • Amaranthus
  • Cosmos
  • Gomphrena
  • Phlox
  • Portaluca
  • Salvia
  • Sunflower
  • Torenia
  • Zinnias

Spring Plant Selections

Spring is the time of year when your garden begins to blossom and all your hard work is put on show. Spring is the favourite time of year for most gardeners as your backyard is full of colour and the air is filled with the fresh perfumes of flowering bulbs.

Best species to plant Spring:

  • Alyssum
  • Amaranthus
  • Salvia
  • Begonia
  • Marigold
  • Petunia
  • Aster
  • Celosia
  • Cleome
  • Sunflower

 How To Plant Properly

Planting is easy, right? Just dig a hole and put the plant in? Wrong! If you do not follow the correct procedure when planting, there’s a good chance they won’t survive.  Here’s a little video showing you the proper planting techniques:

4 Planting Tips For Your Gold Coast Garden

  1. Planting Gold Coast natives will give your garden the best chance of thriving. Selecting local natives will stop you from having to make any changes to your soil, drainage and water regimes. Check out this guide to gardening with Gold Coast native plants.
  2. Try to plant when the conditions are best. Always check the forecast before planting to see if there is going to be any rain, frost or heat waves.
  3. Always monitor your newly established plants to see if they’re growing healthily or need some added TLC to survive
  4. Ensure you plant at the right depth. You need to plant so that the entire root ball is covered with soil (no roots exposed), but not too deep as they could dry out.
